Caves of Hill County
The geology of Hill county is perfect for the formation of caves.
Caves are underground spaces large enough for humans to enter.
Cave Formation
The limestone caves in our area were formed by dissolution. The rock is dissolved by natural acid in the groundwater that seeps through the faults and joints.
Stalactites hang from the ceiling of caves. They are caused by deposits of mineral from dripping water.
Stalagmites rise from the floor of a cave due to dripping mineral water.
Spelunking
Spelunking (the exploration of caves) is a popular activity in southern Missouri. However proper training is essential.
Many caves have been closed due to safety issues. Always read any warning signs carefully before making the decision to proceed.
